This being human can be exhausting. Whether you are in the throws of a relationship break up, or you have started a new job, or you might be cruising through a period of your life that is uneventful, as long as you are breathing you will face personal challenges. Sometimes these moments can hit us harder, and exhaust our energy tanks. In these moments it is important to hear what your soul is calling for. And then go do it. And do it guilt free.
Life can stretch us thin, make us feel brittle and weak, and create a sense of distance from our own selves. This doesn't bode well for our vibrancy and ability to connect deeply and lovingly with our selves and others. It is in everyone's best interest to tend to our own self love tanks!
So today I am sharing with you the TOP 3 SELF LOVE DOINGS that I use in my own life (secretly I have many more, but 3 is a good start!).
Here we go!
FLOWERS. Filling my home with flowers. Every room receives at least one beautiful blossom or green garnish. If I don't have flowers in the garden, or if the budget doesn't allow for a bought bunch, I simply pick sprigs and little branches from green shrubs and trees in my yard and neighbourhood (don't break any neighbourhood rules!). I've also been known to put a bunch of Kale or Parsley in a glass, it looks fresh and vibrant. OR pull some outdoor pot plants in for a day or two, just while you need that little pep up. There is something in flora that nurtures and lifts my spirit. Having some green in every room keeps me connected to that beauty as I move thru the house.
THE BEACH. It doesn't matter the season, or the time of day, the beach is a centring, calming and cleansing place for me. Be it the sun, the wind, the water, the sand, or the soft lapping sound of the sea under a starry night, it all soothes my spirit. The senses come alive, shifting me out of my mind and away from my worries. As humans we have a very real need to spend time in nature, and my body seems to be drawn to the coast for sustenance. I often leave the beach feeling hopeful, even if nothing has actually changed. Whilst I am there, I love to pick shells. They are like little pockets of colour and texture that delight my creative side. I often take them home and make hanging mobiles from them, which means imperfect shells with holes and edges are perfect in their imperfection! Then, when they tinkle in the wind I am teleported back to the beach and connected to all its healing again.
YOU TUBE. If I am feeling troubled or alone in my challenges, I turn to people that are wiser and worldlier than I for guidance and support. I have a crew of spiritual teachers, buddhists and psychologists that I trust and turn to in times of need. They include: Eckert Tolle, Wayne Dyer, Brene Brown, Julia Gilbert, Jack Kornfield, Thich Nhat Hahn, and John Kabat Zinn. Their wisdom is simply a click away. Listening to or watching some of these inspiring people is a real source of support.
Connecting with these 3 things leaves me feeling regrouped, calm, resilient and hopeful. Problems appear smaller, and the path forward is often clearer. Doing Self Love is really up to you, it is what ever feels good for you. It might be more social, it might be dancing in a club! Listen to what you need, and trust that it is what you need. Then do it fully. Enjoy looking after yourself. Enjoy discovering what it is that you can do to care and create for yourself.
